Relationship Development Intervention® (RDI®) Program is a parent-based treatment program that helps parents learn to guide their child to desire and succeed in genuine give-and-take relationships, while addressing flexible thinking, rapid attention shifting, executive functioning and emotional regulation.

The (RDI®) Program is based on the latest scientific research about autism, the brain and developmental psychology.

Individuals with Autism, Asperger's, Pervasive Development Disorder or Non-Verbal Learning Disorder have difficulties in certain core areas:

FAQs

How is RDI® different than other treatment models?

While some programs provide compensations or work around the core deficits of autism.  RDI
® works to remediate these deficits by following developmentally sequenced objectives in a step-by-step way.

What research supports RDI
®?

RDI® is based on years of developmental research on the typical development process, what is involved, and how the mind develops through the guided participation relationship between parent and their child. What Dr. Gutstein noticed was that within all this research on typical development they were describing the process but no one considered that there would be a group of people for which typical development did not happen. He took the typical development process and broke it down into stages and objectives where children with ASD could make discoveries (with their parents guiding them in a systematic way) the way typically developing children do by making an intuitive process into a mindful process. The premise that we must first agree on is that the brain can change and if we agree to that, then there should be no reason RDI® would not work for every child on the autism spectrum.

Below is a list of books that talk about some of these key principles from typical development and changes that take place in the brain of all neurotypical children as they develop. These books are some of the research Dr.Gutstein looked at when formulating the RDI® program, in essence going from the Philosophy of the author’s research, to practical application in the Autism community through breaking down the stages of development. The research supports RDI® because RDI® is founded ON the research!

What does remediation mean?

Remediation is a gradual, systematic process or correcting a deficit, to the point where it no longer constitutes an obstacle to reaching one's potential.

Is RDI® a social skills program?

     No.  RDI
® is a dynamic thinking program.  By filling in  the core deficits of autism children on the spectrum will make discoveries that lead to flexible thinking and  understanding others' perspectives which will naturally improve their aptitude in social situations

How old is too old for RDI®?

Research on brain plasticity had demonstrated that the brain changes throughout life and therefore it is never too late to build new neurological pathways!

Could we use your services long distance?

   Yes, Consultants use the RDI
® operating system to communicate with their families and to track objectives.  Programs such as Skype, can be a useful tool for video conferencing.

Do I need to hire staff to work with my child?

No, the RDI
® is parent-based, meaning parents are the primary guides for their children.  The role of the consultant is to guide the parents in re-establishing their guide role with their child.

What if both parents can not participate?

Although it is ideal for both parents to participate, we would never turn a family away for extenuating circumstances.  Each situation would be treated on an individual basis and accommodations would be made accordingly.
